A turnbuckle is a tensioning screw used to tighten and adjust shrouds, stays, or other wires. On a boat, it is primarily used to stabilize the mast. The turnbuckle consists of two fastening eyes or forks, attached to a right-threaded and a left-threaded screw. Between the ends is a "body" that acts as a long nut. By turning the body, the wire can be tensioned without twisting it.
