The alloy used to manufacture the aluminum anode has a greater negative charge than zinc and a longer lifespan, meaning the anode is more active and for a longer period. In total, an aluminum anode produces approximately 70% more amp/hour over its lifetime than a corresponding traditional zinc anode. As a side benefit, you halve the weight and save some on the price. NOTE! There must be no physical connection between aluminum and zinc anodes, as the aluminum anode would then protect the zinc anode.
